Some have taken to making the one bolt hole an oval shape to get around this change to 90 degree pattern, and that works as long as the weight is correct, so, basically, the easiest way to see this is you need the flex plate that's appropriate to your current engine. The newer setup became the warranty service setup as well, since, when used as a matching pair, the '96 and up combo bolts right into the older models, as long as both are used (same bolt pattern to the crank). That means all '96 and newer torque converters are zero balance and interchangeable between 5.2 and 5.9, it's the flex plates that are different by weight. The balance weight was moved to the flex plate. Also with these changes, there was one more. Now, for '96 and newer, the bolt pattern for the flex plate to torque converter changed slightly, becoming a 90 degree pattern, basically meaning they were all equally spaced, where earlier ones had one that wasn't, which meant it'd only fit one way. Also of note, the LA had slightly more balance weight than the Magnum. Til that time, the 5.9 had external weights on the torque converter. Now, things changed at some point in model year '96. The 5.2's are all internally balanced, thus they do not require external balance weights. The balance weight on the torque converter was the way for, and ONLY for the 5.9, not the 5.2. Regarding the torque converter balance: Negative, negative, negative. Hoping someone on here has had similar issues and can tell me whats going on. I'm just stumped at this point and looking for some direction on where to go from here. If my pcm cant be reprogrammed can I pick up a used one and plug and play or will it need to be flashed to my truck? Sorry this is a long winded version of my question. My question is do I need a 5.2 pcm? If so can my current 5.9 pcm be flashed or reprogrammed for the 5.2? I pretty sure the donor pcm wont work because its a 98 with manual trans and odometer went to digital in 98. Exhaust smells very rich and plugs are damp with gas when I pulled them. I cross referenced the other sensors and they are the same for both trucks and engines. So guys that run the 5. I've done the tune up, checked the timing, new crank sensor, new pick up coil in the distributor because the harness plugs changed from 97 to 98. I purchased a 98 Ram donor truck with a 5.2 and manual trans.(wrecked but ran great for $500) Already did the swap and the truck runs like crap! Horrible idle and backfiring through the exhaust with no power when in gear. The motor was pulled before I bought the truck. I have a 97 Ram that had a 5.9 with auto trans. I'm new to the forum so please bare with me.
